Chamois have been really close to the extincion at the end of the second world war when the total estimeted population counted just 40 individuals. Thanks to the Gran Sasso and Laga Monts National Park and the Majella National Park this species is reborn. Recently many chamoises have been indroduced in some of the others national parks in Abruzzo, Lazio, Umbria and Marche Regions.
Thanks to the beautiful winter coat the Apennine chamois gained the title of "most beautiful chamois of the world". Surpricing the observer will be their agility, dexterity and their charm. This animal has been also called "friend of photographers" cause of its capacity to look and move like a model in front of the camera.
At the start of the summer season it's possible to observe the phenomenon of the "nurseries": during this season, like following a schedule, a single female chamois use to take care for every single newborns of the year meanwhile the rest of the females are having some deserved time off.
Between the most impressive moments of the year we must mention the season of loves.
Around middle of November the adult males start a series of fights which will go on for the whole start of the winter season (November and December). Here we live one of the most breathtaking scenaries for a nature and photography lover. It's pretty easy to capture amazing shoots of this rare animals fighting.
To observe two adult males running down by the mountains during the winter is one of the wildest shows that the Italian wilderness can offer. You won't miss the opportunity to visit Abruzzo and meet its chamois!
