This week, cause of the wonderful weather conditions, we decided to try a more technical adventure then the classic hike and our choice fell on the excursion which leads to the "Bivacco Bafile". It is a refuge situated on the south wall of the Corno Grande in the Gran Sasso and Laga Monts National Park which takes its name from the famous local montaineer Andrea Bafile.
This red metal keg anchored at 2655mt by steel strings will guarantee you one of the most fun and breathtaking trips of Abruzzo. The excursion has no particular difficulty or crazy altitude but the extreme environment, the fun guaranteed by the ferrate to tackle, the spectacle of sunset and starry night riding between the "aquilano" and "teramano" slopes and the sun rising from the Adriatic Sea will give you moments that will remain printed in your memory forever.
Our itinerary starts from the Hotel Campo Imperatore, which can be reached via the cableway of GranSasso of Italy. The footpath is located behind the Astronomical Observatory and, in less than an hour's journey, we will arrive at the saddle of Mt. Aquila (2335mt).
Leaving the summit of Monte Aquila on the right, we aim at the junction between the beginning of the "direct route" leading to the Mt Corno Grande and the path leading to the Bivacco Bafile.
It's time to wear the safety helmet and the ferris wheel kit. From here we have to follow the signs painted on the stones and in short arrive at a metal ladder marking the beginning of the ferrate.
With attention and concentration we face this short ferrate that always ensures great fun.
Among the most spectacular spots we cite a short, very suggestive cross, where the empty space opens and a panoramic balcony where to stare to contemplate the landscape.
After completing the most technical stretch of our excursion we can finally see the Bafile refuge settling red flaming above the stone almost to challenge the imposing walls of the Mt Corno Grande.
We descend to the beginning of the scaffold on which our path is clearly traced, paying attention to the remains of the great snow that forms there. Few steps yet and we will reach the goal.
The "Bivacco Bafile" has 9 seats and is always open, can be used for hiking on the Mt Corno Grande or as a base for all kinds of mountaineering adventure offered by the imposing walls that guard it.
Before embarking on the proposed itineraries, please refer to the Alpine Guide of the regional board of the Alpine guides of Abruzzo to practice the sport in the highest security and to guarantee your own and others' safety.
