Calascio Street Boulder:
In this long summer of excursions to strange places we have once decided to let us be charmed by a great classic of our Apennine: Rocca Calascio.
For the occasion, we will take part in the event organized by Mountain Evolution mountaineering school: the Calascio Street Boulder competition.
It's a rock climbing contest that consists of the creation of several "trails" and traces on the ancient walls of the houses of Calascio village and in particular on the ancient fortress that overlooks it the Rocca di Calascio.
For the castle, there really is no need for presentations as many know has been included in the list of the 10 most beautiful castles in the world by National Geographic while for the village, not everyone is aware of the extraordinary suggestiveness of the small glimpses, alleys and arches of which the place is literally full.
It is in this very unusual location that many high-level athletes and enthusiasts from all over Italy will compete even with their last millimeter of leather on their fingers.
The variety and the amount of "paths", called blocks, is really impressive, more than 30 scattered only within the streets of the village.
To make words of this type of rock climbing, which is really specific and technical discipline, but you can easily understand the charm, practicing this sport on ancient walls, balconies and arches is really great.
You will not only test the climbing technique but also the fantasy of using everything a medieval environment like this can offer.
The Calascio Street Boulder is really unique in its kind and during the hard work and the fun of the day it can happen to be abducted by the inviting smell of lunch prepared by an elderly lady and, why not, be also invited to favor a shot of Genziana (an extrimely bitter local liquor)!
For those who are not so fortunate, do not be afraid because the country is full of characteristic restaurants where recover with the best local handcraft products.
Also during the day, if you haven't stop climbing yet, there are plenty of side activities to do for even the curious like small local markets, escursions and music!
From free escursions with the accompanying Mountain Evolution guides to the fly in tandem with paragliding, passing through demonstrations and slackline trials, make this a truly 360° event.
Going back to climbing, having challenged and being evaluated on the hardest blocks down in the village streets, the best participants qualify for the final stage right on fortress walls! The mostspectacular part of the final is that its scheduled late at night with the only support of the front lamp, a real challenge!
With the fall of the sun we all moved up near the castle church where dinner was held with "Arrosticini" (skewers of sheep) at will.
Meanwhile, the surrounding environment gave its best with the church of Santa Maria della Pietà and in the background the majestic chain of the GranSasso dominated by its Corno Grande (2912m asl) colored by the warm sunset lights.
Nothing to say, the choice of timing was really perfect to take full advantage of all the wonder this magical place can offer. But now is the moment of the Finals!!
The best athletes will now be challenging eachothers on the highest tower of the Rocca Calascio in total absence of light with the only aid of a small front lamp, the achievement is now really hard.
The atmosphere at this moment is at times tense and challenging, the finalists face up to late-night with talent and technique strikes, leaving the audience incredibly magnetized, the silence is broken only by moments of euphoria and encouragement.
The charm of these moments makes this event truly an excellence between climbing competitions and not only, the night spent on the Fortress is a genuinely brilliant idea, and after the difficulties to receive the permits it turned out to be the right move.
After the awards ceremony were celebrated there was still time to spend under the starry sky that only unspoilt places like this may show.
We invite you to try out these emotions on your skin looking forward for next year edition of the Calascio Street Boulder!!
